Why Dog Wee Causes Brown Patches

Dog urine contains very high levels of nitrogen and salts. In small amounts, nitrogen acts like fertiliser, but when a dog wees in one spot the nitrogen becomes so concentrated that it burns the grass. This is often more noticeable with female dogs because they tend to squat and wee in one place.

You’ll typically see brown or straw‑coloured patches where the grass has died, sometimes with a darker green ring around the outside where the nitrogen is less concentrated. If your dog uses the same favourite spot, the damage will repeat. The problem is worse in dry weather because there’s less moisture in the soil to dilute the urine, so the burn happens faster and more severely.

 

Dog Rocks & Water Additives

Many customers try Dog Rocks or water additives, but results vary and the grass often still burns. Products that claim to stop lawn damage by changing a dog’s urine aren’t reliably effective, and vets generally advise against them as they may upset a dog’s health. The only safe and effective way to dilute urine is simply to encourage your dog to drink more water. Combined with rinsing the area after they wee and keeping the lawn well‑watered in dry weather, this is the best way to reduce burn marks.

 

How to Fix Dog Wee Patches

1. Rinse the area straight away (most effective).

A quick splash of water after your dog wees can stop the nitrogen from burning the grass. It’s simple and extremely effective.

 

2. Repair the damaged patches  
Rake out the dead grass, fork the soil to open it up, water the area, apply seed, and topdress the patch. The key is keeping the area consistently moist — if it dries out, the seed will fail.

 

3. Improve soil moisture  
Dry soil makes urine damage worse. Regular watering helps dilute the nitrogen and protects the grass.

 

4. Increase your dog’s water intake  
More hydration means more diluted urine, which reduces the severity of burn marks.

5. Train your dog to wee in one area. 

Create an area for them to wee away from the lawn. 

 

6. Walk them more

Get the dogs out more so they don't wee on the lawn
